Music Intent
“How is it that music can, without words, evoke our laughter, our fears, our highest aspirations?”
Jane Swan
At Colburn we intend to make music and enjoyable and inspiring learning experience. We aim to engage, motivate and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.
The music use encourages children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Our music curriculum draws on a range of musical genres from across different ages and cultures, helping children to develop the cultural capital needed to support their development within an ever changing global community, as well as an understanding of the role music plays within society.
Children are involved in the creative processes of listening, appraising and performing and are helped to develop their understanding of language to help them to explore the dimensions of music (tempo, timbre, pitch). Each year group puts on musical performances at varying points through the year and children also enjoy performances from visiting musicians.
In Key Stage 2 children develop and understanding of musical notation, and begin to use it within their own creative processes.
