At Colburn Community Primary School, staff, governors, children and parents work together to create a warm, caring, family atmosphere in which all pupils flourish and achieve. Our Early Years provision reflects this shared commitment and provides a nurturing environment where every child feels safe, valued and confident to learn.

Our EYFS curriculum is underpinned by our CARE values – Communication, Achievement, Resilience and Empathy – which shape both our curriculum design and daily practice. We prioritise high-quality communication and language experiences, enabling children to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas clearly, while learning to listen to and respect others. Through purposeful talk, storytelling and play, children develop the foundations for strong relationships and lifelong learning.

Achievement in the Early Years is defined by progress, confidence and a growing sense of self-belief. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced and responsive to children’s interests, ensuring that every child is supported and challenged to achieve their very best. We celebrate effort as well as outcomes, recognising that success looks different for every child.

Resilience is fostered through a play-based, exploratory approach that encourages children to take risks, solve problems and persevere when learning feels challenging. Staff model positive attitudes towards mistakes, helping children to develop determination, independence and a love of learning.

Empathy and compassion are embedded throughout our provision. Through stories, role play, shared experiences and daily interactions, children learn to understand their own emotions and the feelings of others. This supports the development of respectful behaviour, positive relationships and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.

By promoting a culture of collaboration, mutual support and inclusion, our EYFS curriculum lays the foundations for children to grow into confident, resilient and thoughtful individuals who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.
