How we teach PE at Colburn

How we teach PE at Colburn

Intent

At Colburn Community Primary School, we offer an ambitious P.E curriculum with a range of 12 different sports. Our children love Physical Education and we deliver 2 hours of creative, challenging and high-quality PE to each child, each week, regardless of ability, which children can build upon and be encouraged to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. We teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel before and after exercise; how physical activity and being active can improve their mood and well-being; how to evaluate their success and the successes of others and to take part in competitive sports and activities. At Colburn, we ensure every child has multiple opportunities to represent the school and has a positive experience in an environment where the children’s motivation, competence and confidence are at the centre of the competition.

Implementation

Our long-term planning sets out the PE units, which are taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Teachers use (and adapt, when necessary) the Complete PE scheme to support their teaching. This scheme has been approved by the Youth Sport Trust, to ensure that children are physically active for sustained periods of time and to support the development of the whole child ensuring that cognitive, emotional and social skills are developed throughout the PE curriculum.

Complete PE is progressive, coherent and apply fundamental skills, which are year group appropriate. Subject vocabulary is displayed in knowledge organisers to support learning, as well as being reinforced by teachers. Pupils participate in two PE lessons each week. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities.

Colburn enters children into a range of competitive sporting events throughout the year. Some of these competitions are organised by local Secondary schools and sports providers from the local area. In addition to these events, smaller groups of children are selected to take part in competitions which allow them to have the chance to progress to a higher level of competition (Level 2 and above). Achievements are celebrated in assemblies.

Swimming

Every class in KS1 & KS2 receives at least 6 swimming lessons at Catterick Leisure Centre each year. These lessons are taught by qualified swimming instructors.  In Year 6 we focus on ensuring that all children can swim 25m using a variety of swimming strokes confidently. Any children that are unlikely to meet this target will be invited to attend additional booster sessions with the following group. Children are provided with Swimming Passports so that progress can be measured from Year 1 to Year 6.

Impact

Our PE curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children, not only through the physical skills, but through underpinning core values and disciplines which PE promotes through physical literacy.  Within lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful, you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health, wellbeing and fitness.  Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these skills, in an independent and effective way, in order to live happy and healthy lives.

Throughout their time at Colburn, all children are provided with opportunities to take part in competitive activities and extra-curricular sport.
